The summer office slump is real. And so is the Friday fade.

Office attendance drops to 41% in July—and Fridays in December? Practically extinct at just 21% utilization.

A colorful beach ball sits in the middle of a sleek, empty office hallway with glass-walled rooms and sunlight streaming through large windows.

If your office is starting to feel pretty empty these days, it’s not just your imagination. The summer slump is real.

Attendance chills out in summer

According to Density’s global customer data, peak daily office utilization dips to 41% in July, sliding down from a Q1 high of 47% in March.

But don’t just blame the heat. Winter’s no hero either: December’s peak utilization hits just 33%, likely buried under a blizzard of PTO requests, holiday parties and end-of-year brain fog.

These insights are based on real-time office usage data from January 2023 through June 2025. Note that there’s variability across Density’s customer portfolio. As a result, not all of these results are statistically significant.

From “Let’s go!” to “Let’s ghost…”

Office attendance starts strong early in the year—averaging 45% peak utilization in Q1 and Q2. But come Q3? It decreases to 43%. And Q4? Just 40%.

The culprits? Summer getaways, back-to-school shuffle and a holiday season that seems to  span from October to January.

Fridays: Basically optional

We’ve always suspected Fridays were pretty flaky—and now we’ve got proof.

  • In July, peak Friday utilization drops to 26%.
  • Back in February (its best month!), Fridays only reached 32%.
  • By December, it’s a ghost town: Fridays bottom out at 21% utilization.

Is the office even open? Or is everyone “WFH” with suspiciously sandy Zoom backgrounds?

Meanwhile…

Tuesdays are having a moment

  • Tuesdays are the busiest day of the week, peaking at 56% utilization in February, March and October.
  • Only in December does Wednesday briefly outshine Tuesday (40% vs. 37%). But let’s be honest—no one knows what day it is in December anyway.

TL;DR

The office is back—but it limps a little over the sumer and over the holidays.

Want to bump into a coworker in the wild?

  • Aim for a Tuesday in February, March or October
  • Avoid any Friday that ends in “-ber” month
