About Density

What is Density?
Density is a people counter and an API. We build a small sensor that measures how busy a location is in real-time. Install Density above a doorway and use our API to access real-time and historical foot traffic.
How does Density work?
Our sensors use infrared light, depth sensing technology, and computer vision to register human movement (through a door) as silhouettes of light. This allows us to count people anonymously.

Hardware & Data

Who installs Density?
The sensor is easily installable. Everything you need to get started comes in the box.
Where can I install Density?
Directly above single and double-door entryways. We support entryways that are up to 8ft (2.4m) wide. For best results, Density should always be installed between 7.5ft (2.3m) and 10ft (3.0m) from the ground. See our Supported Environments for more information.
For Density to work, how many sensors do I need for each room?
One for each of a room’s entrances. For example, if there are two entryways, you will need two sensors.
Can I install Density outside?
No. Density is designed for indoor use only.
How do I access my data?
Through our API. You will also be emailed automated weekly reports.
How accurate is Density?
As long as you follow our guidelines to Supported Environments, our sensors will generate an accurate count. If, for some reason, there is a problem with a sensor’s data quality, you will not be charged for the service while the issue gets fixed.
Is Density safe?
Completely. Our sensor uses eye-safe, invisible infrared light.
Is Density battery-powered?
No. Density requires power from a standard outlet or Power-over-Ethernet (PoE). More information found here.
How does Density get online?
WiFi or Ethernet. Both are supported. More information found here.
What happens if the hardware stops working?
Since we’re responsible for the hardware, simply return it and we’ll send you a new one.
Can Density count anything other than people?
Not yet.

Security & Privacy

Is Density really anonymous?
Yes. Our sensors measure depth data. Density cannot derive your age, gender, or ethnicity.
Does Density “scan” a room?
No. It only measures movement through an entryway, registering +1 and -1.
Does Density sell my data to other people?
No. Your network of installed sensors generates data that only you can access.

It's important to understand that Density was designed and crafted for an indoor environment.
Density is an indoor device
Do not install outdoors

Density was designed for standard-sized doorways and entryways. It's not intended to be used on a ceiling or in the corner of a space.
Density mounts above a doorway
Do not mount on a ceiling or in a corner

Door Size

The ideal door height should be no shorter than 7.5 ft, no taller than 10 ft, and no wider than 8 ft for a single sensor.
Minimum height: 7.4 ft / Maximum height: 10 ft
Do not mount on a doorway wider than 8 ft

Mounting Space

The space between the top of the doorway and the ceiling needs at least 7 inches of vertical mounting space.
You need at least 7" of vertical space in order to mount the sensor above an entryway
Mounting is not possible without the adequate vertical mounting space above the entryway
